Early Years Foundation Stage

In accordance with the Department for Education’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Profile Handbook 2021 and the key recommendations from the Birth to 5 Matters non-statutory guidance, our youngest learners access a broad and balanced curriculum which offers short term targets that support the progress of their long-term Education and Health Care Plan targets.

Our pupils access the 7 areas of learning, and these are separated into Prime and Specific areas.

The 3 Prime Areas of Learning are:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

The 4 Specific Areas of Learning are:

  • Literacy
  • Maths
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

The pupils access the full breadth of the EYFS curriculum each week. In accordance with Government guidelines, the initial focus for the pupils is on the three Prime Areas of learning. Within the prime areas, pupils learn fundamental skills that set them up for their schooling and life beyond Springfield. The pupils access the prime areas of learning each morning and then one of the specific areas of learning each afternoon. In this way, pupils should leave the EYFS with a method of communication, greater self-regulation skills, developed fine and gross motor skills as well as increased independence in self-help skills which are fundamental to them accessing and progressing within the subject curriculum at KS1 and beyond.

KS1 and KS2 Curriculum

The Primary Department follows 4 different curriculum pathways, Red, Yellow, Green and Blue.

Pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties follow our  Red Curriculum Pathway.  The curriculum in this pathway ensures that pupils cover all the fundamental areas that are important for their development. The pathway uses the engagement model record and assess pupils progress within the fundamental areas of their development.

For pupils who are at Bridge 1 and pre-key stage standard 1 - 4 they will  follow the Green Pathway.

Pupils at Pre-key stage standard 5 and above will follow the Blue Pathway.

Pupils with high sensory needs will follow our Yellow Pathway, this pathway ensures pupils obtain and build new skills in non-subject specific areas to prepare them for further learning and life beyond Springfield School. Outcomes from the Autism Education Trusts Framework are used to inform planning and the delivery of lessons within this pathway.

Topics – All pupils in primary follow a half termly topic. The Foundation Stage follow a 2 year rolling programme and Key Stage 1 & 2 follow a 3 year rolling programme.

English – Communication and understanding is the foundation for all lessons at Springfield; communication mats/vocabulary mats will be used continuously throughout the week within all subjects. There are four discrete lessons of English taught at Springfield to ensure varied skills are taught. These are: Reading Comprehension, Writing transcription, Writing Composition and Speaking and Listening.
There is also daily reading opportunities and 4 lessons of phonics taught within the week. Springfield uses Twinkl Phonics Scheme which is accompanied by their Rhino Reading Scheme.
Children work towards targets within their appropriate pathway: red, yellow, green and blue.

Maths- For pupils following our Red Pathway Maths is taught through Communication and Language. For pupils who follow our Green and Blue Pathways Maths is taught as a discreate lesson 3/4 times a week. Pupils follow the Yellow Pathway will experience discreate Maths lessons whilst working towards outcomes from the Autism Education Trust Framework.

Science -  For pupils following our Red Pathway Science is taught through Communication and Language. For pupils who follow our Green and Blue Pathways Science is taught as a discrete subject twice a week. Pupils following the Yellow Pathway will experience Science lessons whilst working towards outcomes from the Autism Education Trust Framework.

Computing - This is taught cross curricular through other subject areas in all four curriculum pathways.

PSHE– Pupils have two timetable sessions a week where they explore PSHE target based work alongside outdoor learning and cooking. Throughout our school day pupils are provided with planned opportunities to encourage the development of personal, social and emotional skills.

Physical Development / PE – This is delivered daily to those pupils on the red pathway to ensure that pupils get sufficient time for physio and MOVE Programmes. Pupils following the Green, Blue and Yellow pathways have PE lessons twice weekly, lessons include swimming / water confidence.

Music – Pupils have one timetabled music session a week. Lessons follow the primary topic theme to explore different musical concepts, composition and performance.

Foundation Subjects – Foundation Subjects allow our pupils to develop their personal learning targets, practical skills and subject knowledge in the context of Geography, History, RE, Art, DT and MFL. Lessons are planned to support children on yellow, blue and green learning pathways with a range of sensory, interactive and task based learning opportunities. The nature of the subject matter ensures these lessons promote a high level of interest, enjoyment and engagement. As with all subjects, any relevant links to British Values and ICT are made.
